There are over 300 stairways in San Francisco, some run over 3 blocks long, some less than one block and used by locals only These stairways were created in part by the hills and valleys and real estate development over the years.
Take your camera, good walking shoes,some water and have an amazing journey.
Here are the top five stairways.
Filbert St steps
This stairway is Famous for the Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill. The Filbert St and Greenwich St steps are the most well traveled and near Coit Tower. Amazing views surrounded by beautiful roses, flowers. Easily accessed by Telegraph Hill Blvd and Filbert St.
Pacific Heights
Incredible views of the Pacific Ocean and the Palace of Fine arts through this upscale neighborhood. Start at Broadway & Baker for the Fillmore and Baker St steps.
Presidio
This is another upscale neighborhood. Take the Lyon St. stairs at Broadway down to the Exploratorium and the Marina district.
Upper Market
The Saturn St and Vulcan St stairways go through the residential neighborhood above the Castro district. Primarily used by locals. Surrounded by beautiful gardens, unique cottages and City Views.
Start at Lower Terrace and Levant St
Inner Sunset
This stairway has been recently restored by a community project. These steps are covered in beautiful mosaic tiles contributed by local merchants, schools and artists. These stairs have Panoramic Ocean and Golden Gate Bridge views surrounded by plants and flowers. Start at 16th Ave and Moraga St.
